U.S. Patents for P53 and RB1 Cancer Gene Tests Received

Visible Genetics, Inc. (VGI), Toronto, Ontario, Canada, announced the issuance of two U.S. patents covering methods and test kits that permit the rapid, inexpensive detection of mutations in two genes associated with human cancers.

The first U.S. Patent covers the p53 GeneKit, which allows users to quickly and inexpensively detect possible mutations in the DNA code of the p53 gene. The second, covers the RB1 GeneKit, which allows users to search for possible mutations in the RB1 gene from a simple blood sample.

Mutations in the p53 gene are found in a wide variety of tumors, including about 70 percent of colorectal cancers, 50 percent of lung...
