Non-MHC Genes Identified in Animal Model

Scientists have identified several "... non-major histocompatibility complex (MHC) loci" that appear to control susceptibility to and severity of collagen-induced inflammatory arthritis in rats.

Dr. Elaine F. Remmers, U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and colleagues reported in the September 1996 issue of Nature Genetics that "... not surprisingly, we identified a major susceptibility factor ... on chromosome 20 in the vicinity of the rat major histocompatibility complex (MHC)," (Nature Genetics 1996;14:82-85).
