Cytofectin Technology Licensed To Treat CF

Vical Inc., San Diego, California, announced that Genzyme has exercised its option under a 1993 agreement to an exclusive license of Vical's proprietary cytofectins as non-viral vectors in gene therapy for the potential treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF).

Cytofectins are a class of cationic lipids that provide a synthetic alternative to viral vectors for in vivo gene delivery. The lipids are formulated to combine with DNA to form complexes which are capable of delivering genes into cells. Lipid-DNA complexes could become a preferred delivery method for gene therapy due to their potential safety advantages and ease of manufacture.
