The (alpha)2 -macroglobulin receptor/low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein ((alpha)2 -MR/LRP) is unique in its ability to bind and endocytose a variety of very different ligands. These include lipoprotein remnants, cytokines/growth factors, and proteases (in complex with (alpha)2 -macrogobulin), as well as plasminogen activators complexed with inhibitors.
