International Lawyers Produce Guidelines For Human Genome Information

Lawyers from around the globe met to produce the final draft of a treaty aimed at establishing minimum legal standards for the use of human genetic information.

The treaty, developed by the International Bar Association's Medicine and Law Committee, is expected to be presented to the United Nations in 1997. The Committee, part of the IBA's Section on General Practice, has been working on the treaty for almost five years upon the suggestion of the Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) - a worldwide co-operative of scientists working on unveiling the information attached to human genes.
