DNA-Mediated Immunization Addresses Chronic Hepatitis B Carrier State

Successful DNA-mediated immunization in a transgenic murine model of hepatitis B surface antigen chronic carrier state suggests the potential of this method to treat chronic human hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers.

Following initial infection with HBV, some individuals fail to resolve their infection and become chronic carriers. The proportion of HBV-infected chronic carriers is estimated between 5-20 percent of those infected as adults and as high as 95 percent in infants who were infected perinatally.
