Local and Systemic Response Possible with Combination Vaccine

A genetically modified tumor cell vaccine, co-expressing genes for both interferon alpha (IFN-(alpha)) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) thymidine kinase, promotes both a local and systemic antitumor response in a tumor-bearing murine model.

In preliminary research, Italian researchers determined that the transduction of the murine IFN-(alpha)1 gene into various metastatic mouse tumor cells could result in a loss of tumorigenicity and an acquired capacity to induce long-lasting antitumor immunity after injection of these modified cells into immunocompetent syngeneic mice (M.
