Scientists Find Cancer Heredity Proof

Researchers have found the first proof that prostate cancer runs in families, locating a gene that increases the likelihood of developing the disease.

The finding was published in the November 22, 1996, issue of Science and has been expected to shed light on how prostate cancer develops, and perhaps on how to prevent and treat it, the researchers said. About 317,000 men in the United States have been estimated to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996.

"We have not yet got the gene in our clutches," said Francis Collins, National Centre for Human Genome Research at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. But he acknowledged the discovery...
