Several studies have suggested that there is a protective effect accorded by certain heat shock proteins (hsp) against heat, metabolic stress, and ischemia. The mechanism by which these proteins, among which the inducible hsp70 (hsp70i) is predominant, protect cardiac cells against ischemia, however, remains elusive.
Ruben Mestril and colleagues from the University of California at San Diego demonstrated that adenoviral-mediated transfer of the hsp70i gene into rat myocardial cells protects these cells...
