More Progress in Cancer Genetics

Scientists reported another advance in understanding the underlying genetics of colon cancer -- a finding that could lead to better tools for early diagnosis.

Dr. Manuel Perucho and colleagues, Burnham Institute, La Jolla, California, reported their findings of a mutation in the BAX gene in the February 14, 1997, issue of Science. The BAX gene is involved in cell death, or apoptosis. When there is a mutation of the gene, cells can proliferate, leading to cancer.

When cells replicate, DNA repair enzymes "proofread" the genetic information in the new cells and make repairs. If there is a flaw with one of these enzymes, errors pile up and the result...
