HSV-TK/GCV suicide gene therapy has been a useful tool and/or therapy in several areas of medical science. It has been used as a negative dominant selectable marker; used to study lineage formation in cultured cells and transgenic animals; used to achieve conditional ablation of targeted cell types; as a gene therapy to selectively treat tumor cells; and has also been studied as a method of controlling HIV infection.
