Lipid-Based Gene Therapy May Help Prevent Lung Cancer

Using a lipid-based gene therapy approach, Texas researchers hope that wild-type p53 gene replacement may help prevent and treat lung cancer in patients with p53 mutations.

p53 gene mutations are found in 30 percent of in situ lung cancers and in 60 percent of invasive lung cancers. Yiyu Zou and colleagues from the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, chose p53 gene replacement to test the feasibility of lipid-based gene delivery systems for local regional therapy of the respiratory tract.
