Ability To Synthesize Novel Hypusine Reagent Reported

SunPharm Corporation, Jacksonville, Florida announced the publication of a paper in the May 16, 1997, issue of The Journal of Organic Chemistry that describes the synthesis of a peptide containing an unusual amino acid called hypusine.

Hypusine normally is found in a protein, eIF5A, that not only may be important in cellular protein synthesis, but also is thought to play a key role in the replication of HIV.

Hypusine is produced by cells through the modification of a single lysine residue in only one cellular protein, eIF5A. During HIV infection, viral protein synthesis has been shown to require interaction of eIF5A with the viral gene product Rev. ...
