Milestone Achieved and Agreements Announced for Bacterial Genomes

Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (HGS), Rockville, Maryland, announced that it has sequenced the Streptococcus pneumoniae genome, a major bacterial pathogen responsible for severe respiratory and other infections.

In March 1996, HGS licensed F. Hoffman-La Roche, Basel, Switzerland, and Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. (Roche), Nutley, New Jersey, the right to use the S. pneumoniae sequence information to identify potential new anti-infectives and antibiotics in return for an upfront payment, a milestone related to sequencing, and royalties on the sale of certain products.
