Although highly efficient at transferring foreign genes to the liver, as well as to quiescent cells, recombinant adenoviruses (Ads) have a limited duration of gene expression due to both humoral and cellular immune responses by the host against the vector. This antiviral immune response also prevents re-administration of the vector if additional treatment is necessary.
