Cellular Gene Therapy Has Made Steady, Impressive Progress

Transfusion medicine could play a role in the advancement of cellular gene therapy.

Researchers should pursue alternative vector systems and learn a great deal more about cell biology, gene structure and function, and host immune response to gene products and viral proteins, said Harvey G. Klein, M.D., Department of Transfusion Medicine, Warren G. Magnuson Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland ("Cellular Gene Therapy: a Credible Odyssey," [editorial], Transfusion, July 1997;37:675-677).

He noted that these issues represent a few of the challenges to basic science.
