Tolerance Induced by Eating Plants Expressing Autoantigen

"Eat your vegetables" may one day be doctors' advice to patients with autoimmune disease.

A Canadian research team has successfully induced tolerance to an autoantigen in mice by feeding them transgenic plants expressing the antigen.

"We show that a GAD [glutamic acid decarboxylase]-expressing transgenic plant, given as a dietary supplement, inhibits the development of diabetes in the non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse," reported S.-W. Ma of the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada, and colleagues ("Transgenic Plants Expressing Autoantigens Fed To Mice To Induce Oral Immune Tolerance," Nature Med, 1997;3(7):793-6).
