Telomeres, located at the ends of chromosomes, regulate cells' replicative capacities. Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein that enzymatically synthesizes the 5'd-(TTAGGG)-3' repeat. It maintains or elongates telomere length in immortal and some somatic cells that would otherwise undergo cellular senescence (G.B. Morin et al., Cell 1989;59:521-9).
