According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 88th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, held April 12-16, 1997, in San Diego, California, "A promising new therapy for cancer is gene-directed enzyme prodrug therapy (GDEPT) where genes which code for a prodrug-activating enzyme are delivered to a tumor, followed by delivery of a nontoxic prodrug. The genes used most frequently in gene therapy trials to date code for the enzymes cytosine deaminase or HSV thymidine kinase.
