IL-1 is a cytokine with different properties from most other cytokines: it lacks a signal sequence. This means that it remains in its immature proform within cells. The release of IL-1 has been shown to be restricted predominantly to activated monocytes and macrophages, and is associated with apoptosis of the producer cell.
