Silent Hepatitis B Mutant May Promote HCV Replication

Hepatitis C virus frequently occurs with coinfection by the silent hepatitis B virus mutant, according to a report from Japan.

The silent hepatitis B virus (HBV) mutant appears to promote the replication of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the liver, researcher Toshikazu Uchida and colleagues noted ("Hepatitis C Virus is Frequently Coinfected with Serum Marker-Negative Hepatitis B Virus: Probable Replication Promotion of the Former by the Latter as Demonstrated by In Vitro Cotransfection," Journal of Medical Virology 1997;52:399-405).
