Protein Identified That May Accelerate Disease Development

A protein that is normally produced in humans to regulate immune responses and facilitate wound repair has been found to accelerate the development of toxic deposits in the brain, a team of researchers from the J. David Gladstone Institutes; University of California, San Francisco; and University of California, San Diego has discovered.

Brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease that show dense deposits of a substance called amyloid around blood vessels also contain high levels of the protein, called transforming growth factor beta-1, or TGF, the researchers reported in the October 9, 1997 issue of Nature.
