Intraocular Melanomas Offer Excellent Target for Gene Therapy

Adenovirus-mediated gene transfer of plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) directly in the intraocular space inhibits metastasis of uveal melanomas in a clinically relevant model.

Uveal melanoma results in the death of half of those afflicted with this tumor. Despite therapeutic advances, little progress has been made in reducing mortality associated with this disease. Intraocular melanomas are highly metastatic in general, and it is this metastatic process that eventually kills the patient.
