U.S. Researchers Revisit AIDS Vaccine

U.S. researchers said they were making another attempt to develop a vaccine against HIV, saying they hoped their formula would be more effective than previous dismal efforts.

But other AIDS researchers, responding to the announcement that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved safety trials of a new vaccine in human volunteers, said a successful vaccine against HIV was a long way off and no one should get his hopes up.

Julia Hurwitz and Karen Slobod of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, said their vaccine, which uses part of the protein coating of HIV, was meant to protect healthy people against infection...
