MDR is one of the major obstacles to effective cancer treatment and often is associated with the expression of a variety of MDR-associated genes, including mdr1, LRP and MRP. mdr1 and MRP code for energy-dependent efflux pumps while the LRP gene encodes a vault protein. All of these gene products contribute to the establishment of the MDR phenotype in resistant tumor cells.
