Research has confirmed that tumor cells escape the host's immune surveillance system because they do not provide the essential signals for the activation of the host immune system. Vaccinating patients with tumor cells, modified so that the immune system recognizes them, is one method of bypassing this problem. Several vaccines have undergone scrutiny.
