Genome Sequencing Revolutionizes Vaccine Research

Research to decipher the genetic sequence of diseases such as malaria, cholera, and syphilis could lead to safer, more effective, and cheaper vaccines, said a British researcher.

For the first time, scientists are able to identify the genes that make diseases so virulent and the molecules that microbes need to attack the body's immune system.

"As our understanding of microbes deepens, new approaches to the control of infections, especially vaccines, will be feasible," said Professor Richard Moxon of the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University.
