Gene Therapy, Plastics, Other Advances Offer Hope

Gene therapy, a plastic coating that replaces damaged cartilage, and new "super aspirin" could offer new hope to arthritis sufferers, researchers said.

Antibiotics and a substance that attacks the damage caused by arthritis at the molecular level also could offer novel ways to attack the painful and crippling disease, scientists told a meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.

Some of the treatments are being tested in people, while others are years away from development. But all show that a greater understanding of the processes that underlie both rheumatic and osteoarthritis can transform how they are treated.
