Genetically Modified Dendritic Cells Elicit Antitumor Responses

Autologous human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DCs) which have been genetically modified to express melanoma antigens elicited antitumor responses in vitro. The effects were enhanced by cotransfection of the cytokine genes for interleukin-12 (IL-12) and interferon-(alpha) (IFN-(alpha)).

An attractive alternative to protein- or peptide-based immunization approaches involves the use of DCs in a DNA-based strategy.
