Tamoxifen Data Seen as A Boon for Gene Testing

Dramatic data showing the drug tamoxifen can prevent breast cancer is seen as likely to spur more women to seek tests that can identify defective genes linked to the disease, boosting prospects for two rival gene-testing companies, Wall Street analysts said.

But analysts and officials of the companies, Myriad Genetics Inc., Salt Lake City, Utah, and Oncormed Inc., Gaithersburg, Maryland, said that any increase in breast cancer gene screening is likely to be slow and steady rather than explosive because of a variety of factors.
