Put Down That Syringe - Try A Potato Instead

Protection against diseases ranging from Hepatitis B to rabies and cholera could one day come from munching on a potato, a tomato or a piece of spinach, British and American scientists said.

A United Kingdom research group Axis Genetics Plc said development of a new generation of edible vaccines derived from genetically-altered plants had moved a step nearer through an agreement with the U.S.-based Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI) for Plant Research.

Axis and BTI believe by altering plant viruses and the genetic make up of fruit and vegetables they can provoke the body's natural defences against attack from a raft of viruses and bacteria.
