According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 6th Symposium on Gene Therapy: Towards Gene Therapeutics, held May 4-6, 1998, at the Max Delbruck Center for Molecular Medicine, Berlin-Buch, Germany, "We have developed a novel approach for the target cell-specific transfer of DNA via receptor-mediated endocytosis. Our strategy is based on a multi-domain fusion protein combining in a single polypeptide three functions required for specific and efficient DNA-transfer: 1) a DNA binding domain derived from the yeast GAL4 protein confers sequence specific high affinity binding to DNA; 2) the translocation domain of diphtheria toxin facilitates the release of internalized protein/DNA...
