According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 12th World AIDS Conference, held June 28 - July 3, 1998, in Geneva, Switzerland, "Background: The CD4 T-cell response to HIV infection is critical to the pathogenesis of HIV infection and HIV specific CD4 cells participate in the generation of humoral and cellular responses to infection. IL-7 is capable of augmenting both humoral and cellular immune responses. We show that genetically engineered, IL-7 producing HIV specific CD4⁺ T cells can affect cellular responses to HIV.
