According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 3rd International Symposium on In Utero Stem Cell Transplantation and Gene Therapy, held September 12-14, 1998, in Portland, Oregon, "Umbilical cord blood is a potential source for pre- and postnatal allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and gene therapy for the correction of genetic diseases. We aimed to determine if second and early third trimester cord blood differs from term cord blood in respect to number of progenitors, in vitro growth and expansion potential.
