Recent research has suggested that Cx43 may influence gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC). GJIC is thought to influence the bystander effect of HSVtk/GCV suicide gene therapy (F.D. Vrionis et al., Gene Therapy 1997;4:577-85). In many cancers, GJIC is down-regulated.
