Ad-Mediated IL-2 Gene Therapy Deemed Safe in Cancer Pts

Adenovector-mediated delivery of the interleukin-2 (IL-2) gene into metastatic breast cancer and melanoma patients demonstrated the safety of adenovirus-mediated gene therapy in humans.

A.K. Stewart and colleagues from several institutions in Canada and the United States conducted a phase 1 trial of direct injection of an E1,E3-deleted adenovirus encoding IL-2 (AdCAIL-2) into subcutaneous deposits of melanoma or breast cancer ("Adenovector-Mediated Gene Delivery of Interleukin-2 in Metastatic Breast Cancer and Melanoma: Results of a Phase 1 Clinical Trial," Gene Therapy, March 1999;6(3):350-63).
