HTLV-I tax Sequences Missing in Population of Blood Donors

HTLV-I tax sequences were absent from a population of healthy blood donors negative for anti-HTLV-I in a recently reported, multicenter, blind study.

The findings represent a discrepancy from previously reported studies, indicated U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) researcher Elliot P. Cowan and colleagues ("Absence of Human T-Lymphotropic Virus Type I tax Sequences in a Population of Normal Blood Donors in the Baltimore, MD/Washington, DC, Area: Results from a Multicenter Study," Transfusion, August 1999;39(8):904-909).

Cowan et al. designed the study to examine the reproducibility of previous results by New York University (NYU)...
