E.Q. Tan and colleagues from the University of Iowa explored reasons for estrogen's protective effects in women. Their results were reported in the journal Cardiovascular Research ("Estrogen Receptor-Alpha Gene Transfer into Bovine Aortic Endothelial Cells Induces eNOS Gene Expression and Inhibits Cell Migration," Cardiovascular Research, 1999;43(3):788-797).
