HIV-1-TAT Transfected Cells to Undergo Apoptosis

HIV-1 Tat protein may be involved in the lymphocyte depletion seen in AIDS patients, researchers from Spain reported.

"The effects of HIV-1 Tat protein on mitochondria membrane permeability and apoptosis were analyzed in lymphoid cells," wrote A. Macho and colleagues from the University of Cordoba, Spain. "In this report we show that stable-transfected HIV-Tat cells are primed to undergo apoptosis upon serum withdrawal."

Macho et al. published their study in the journal Oncogene ("Susceptibility of HIV-1-TAT Transfected Cells to Undergo Apoptosis. Biochemical Mechanisms," Oncogene, December 9, 1999;18(52):7543-7551).
