Antisense Strategies May Effectively Treat Tumors

Down-regulation of growth factors produced by tumor cells using antisense strategies may be a way to treat some types of tumors.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent mediator of solid tumor growth.

At the 7th Meeting of the European Society of Gene Therapy, held November 26-28, 1999, in Munich, Germany, Mi-Ae Kang and colleagues presented their study in which they blocked VEGF to induce tumor regression. Their study is titled "The growth inhibition of hepatoma cells by gene transfer of antisense vascular endothelial growth factor."
