Cytokine Gene Transfer to Lymphocytes Reduces Inflammation

Retroviral mediated gene transfer of the cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) may be an effective therapy for Crohn's disease, suggest researchers from The Netherlands.

"CD4⁺ T-lymphocytes have a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease," said C. van Montfrans and colleagues from the Academic Medical Center and the Netherlands Cancer Institute, The Netherlands. "A specific IL-10-producing subset of CD4⁺ T-lymphocytes (called Tr-1) potently downregulates Th1-lymphocytes in experimental Crohn's disease.
