Phase I Testing for a Ras Pathway Inhibitor Initiated

Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that the company, along with its partner Bayer Corporation, initiated Phase I clinical testing in Germany for a Ras pathway inhibitor as a cancer therapy.

A U.S. Investigational New Drug Application (IND) for this compound was filed in May 2000. Additional international regulatory filings for Phase I multi-dose trials in Canada and Belgium are planned.

A key function of the Ras pathway is cell proliferation. In normal cell proliferation, when the Ras pathway is activated, or "on," it sends a signal telling the cell to grow and divide. When a gene in the pathway is mutated, the signal may not turn "off," causing...
