Alphaviruses Have Potential for Gene Therapy in the Brain

Two types of viruses from the alphavirus group could ultimately provide an efficient vehicle for gene therapy as a way to treat certain inherited disorders of the nervous system.

Researchers in Switzerland have been investigating the potential of the semliki forest virus and the sindbis virus that can be used to carry a package of genetic material to introduce new genes into target cells. The findings demonstrate the importance of the virus system in neurobiological research, as until now, it has been difficult to genetically manipulate nerve cells within brain tissue.
