Oral DNA Vaccine Induces Mucosal and Systemic Immune Responses

Researchers in Japan, Poland, and the United States collaborated on designing an orally-delivered DNA vaccine that produces mucosal and systemic immune responses against HIV.

Discussing their study at the 14th European Immunology Meeting, held September 23-27, 2000, in Poznan, Poland, presenting author Andrzej Wierzbicki and colleagues said: "We described induction of HIV envelope (env)-specific systemic and mucosal immune responses by oral vaccination of BALB/c mice with env-encoded plasmid DNA encapsulated in poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) microparticles.
