Gene Therapy Approach Successful in Phase I Clinical Trial

by Michelle Marble -- Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene transfer into coronary arteries in patients with inoperable angina resulted in dramatic reductions in symptoms, a study from the United States found.

"Increasing numbers of patients are presenting with medically intractable angina, despite having had multiple previous bypass and/or percutaneous revascularization procedures," stated Kishor G. Lathi and colleagues from St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Massachusetts. "They are judged inoperable due to lack of available conduits, diffuse distal disease, or unacceptably high perioperative risk."
