Transduction Successful in Direct Intra-Articular Gene Therapy

A study in arthritic rats has demonstrated successful transgene expression after intra-articular injection of naked DNA.

But while transduction was demonstrated, the therapeutic value of the treatment was limited.

Researchers pursued the naked DNA injection approach to gene delivery because viral vectors of direct intra-articular gene therapy bring with them some inherent obstacles, such as variable host response to viral proteins as well as incorporation into host DNA, explained D.L.
