Antisense Growth Factor Therapy Inhibits Metastatic Tumor Growth

Antisense basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) gene therapy via adenoviral vector works on several levels in treatment of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, a study conducted in mice demonstrates.

K. Inoue and colleagues at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center reported that in vitro, adenoviral-mediated antisense bFGF (Ad bFGF-AS) promotes endothelial cell apoptosis and inhibits reproduction of these cells. Their current experiment tested Ad bFGF-AS therapy in vivo in athymic nude mice. Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) cell line 253J-BVR was implanted under the skin of the mice.
