Tumor-Specific Expression of TNF Receptor Triggers Apoptosis

by Deborah W. Heinrich, staff medical writer - Researchers at the University of Verona in Italy induced apoptosis in melanoma cell lines, using expression of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor.

TNF(alpha) is cytotoxic to tumor cells, however high doses of TNF(alpha) can be damaging to normal tissues. In a previous report, F. Bazzoni and colleagues reported that the M-r 55,000 TNF receptor could induce apoptosis in the absence of TNF(alpha).

In their current study, Bazzoni et al. placed the TNF receptor under the control of a melanoma specific promoter/enhancer element and cloned the construct into a replication deficient adenovirus vector. ...
