L. Steinstraesser and coworkers used particle-mediated gene transfer to introduce reporter genes to burned skin. In an animal model, water burns at 60(degree)C were administered for 10, 20, or 40 seconds. Ten-second scalds were considered superficial, partial thickness burns, 20-second scalds were categorized as deep partial thickness burns, and 40-second scalds were full thickness burns.
