Prodrug-Based Stem Cell Purging Improves Therapy

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in the U.S. have developed an effective prodrug-based technique for purging malignant cells from stem cell harvests from neuroblastoma patients.

"Tumor cells that contaminate hematopoietic cell preparations contribute to the relapse of neuroblastoma patients who receive autologous stem cell rescue as a component of therapy," according to Mary K. Danks and colleagues at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.

Danks and coworkers found that a viral vector can be used to activate a prodrug that eradicates neuroblastoma cells in vitro while sparing healthy stem cells.
